This Kitchen wallpaper thingy has been on my mind for quite sometime now and I wanted to address the zebra in my head {let’s just start a new word which means the nagging tug in your head which must be absolutely done. Like they say elephant in the room? oui?} right at the beginning of the year. January is all about energy and vitality for me and I’ve always believed that if you start the year right, you’ll end it right too! And even if you didn’t, you can always start it the way you want to. So it had to be January.

By the way, January and vitality reminds me- for once in my life I have made a yearly content plan and I think you all will really like it! I have divided the year into packets of twelve emotions that I feel in the respective months and each month you will see blogs, photos and projects revolving around the same! Honestly, I don’t know if you feel this way but if you do, it’ll be awesome to jam together. More about that bit soon.

For now, it’s January and being the first month of the year, is all about renewed energy, vitality and projects that fill you up with a new lease of life! And what else to fill your space up with some renewed and energy than a patch of fresh wallpaper!

Given the fact that I will be spending a bit of time in the kitchen now, freshening up them old skills, I thought it’ll be a good place to start adding some energy into! Plus I have lived without a whitewashed kitchen brick wall for too long! I had a vision of standing in a beautiful kitchen with brick walls making coffee and it was time!

After all, what do they say, “A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do” right?

Details of my Kitchen Wallpaper

I chose a pre-gummed, waterproof kitchen wallpaper in whitewashed exposed brick motif and it’s perfect for the kitchen space I have. A lot of you have asked about spillage and cleaning: this is completely waterproof and can be cleaned with a damp cloth and light soapy water when needed. The company claims that will last for upto 7 years and I am hoping it does but I am pretty sure I’ll be bored of it by then!

How to add your kitchen wallpaper

I ordered a 50 sqft roll and you will have a ft and half or wastage so decide accordingly. My kitchen is largish: 8 ft by 6 ft with about 12 ft height so I need another roll to cover two sides of the kitchen. I am leaving one side as is to add grey contact paper.

Here are the do’s and dont’s of kitchen wallpaper-ing

While a pre-gummed wallpaper don’t have much do’s, there are a few major dont’s which you must pay heed to.

  1. Do not apply on textured walls. It won’t work. The air bubbles will look terrible and the textured surface won’t let you smooth it out.
  2. You can use it on a smooth, clean, dry, painted surface but never on soap-residue. So make sure you clean the surface with just plain water if you stick it. Soap residue will weaken the adhesive.
  3. Do not apply on a surface that gets affected with moisture or direct sunlight.
  4. Do not take the backing out completely and then add the wallpaper. Remove a section of the backing, attach the wallpaper and smoothen as you proceed slowly peeling the backing. Also, using a good smoothing tool. Guys, this step is really important or you will end up with pesky bubbles.
  5. If you do end up with some bubbles- which you will- with an exacto knife make a small incision in the wallpaper and push the air out by squeezing it from both sides. Should I gross you out? Like a pimple.

Also a lot of you asked me on Instagram as to how long will it last and if it will be able to withstand the epic Indian kitchen…well, honestly, we’ll have to wait and watch. I have never done this before so I wouldn’t know how long and how much but for now, it’s good!

I’ll keep giving you updates as and on, real time!

Must run, got a seriously long day to corner and I’m sleepy af.

Bye now!
